informative. The increased number of newer platforms has resulted in a healthy

new. The sophistication of their information systems has also been a major
factor influencing migration to more useful platforms. Facebook has been a
major benefiter of the migration. The emergence of WhatsApp has also influenced
the migration. The migration was unpredictable, with most teenagers being the
migrants. Myspace and AOL Messenger were affected. Their users resorted to
using Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp. Myspace is less popular nowadays; losing
customers to Facebook. In evaluating why users leave a platform for a newer
one, it is important to note the difference between the platforms mentioned
above (McAfee, & Brynjolfsson, 2017).

The success of a
platform requires more struggle than it is thought. The continued technological
improvements require a company to consistently update its platform. One of the
major reason why users leave a platform is the failure to optimize the degree
of access to the consumers. Platforms which have fallen out of the market
lacked openness to their customers. This is determined by the extent to which
you allow your user the use the platform. Denying the users too much access to
the platform functions makes them opt for another platform. Keeping a platform
closed disconnects the network between users while allowing too much access
degrades the value of the platform: resulting in misuse, frauds, misbehaviors
and poor contribution from the users. In 1980’s, Apple failed miserably after
they started charging developers for their tools. This resulted in a poor
connection between users and software producers. Such poor connection would
make the users migrate to a newer and better platform (McAfee, &

Failure to involve
developers can result in the failure of a platform.  Software developers have also been
disassociated with the platform. The software developers must be informed their
role in developing the software. Putting the developers aside denies the
platform chance for technological improvement. Users eventually leave the
platform when it is not offering the preferred services. The developers are
involved later in innovating, design and performance monitoring and payments
for their participation. Failure to launch the right side can result in users
leaving a platform. Most platform owners fail to decide which part of the
platform to concentrate on. Many users migrated from AOL Messenger to WhatsApp
after AOL failed to emphasize on user interaction phase. WhatsApp on the other
side emphasized on the user’s interaction. It is also advisable to focus on
both consumers and producers during the launch.

            Users also leave a platform when
they don’t get what they want. A platform is created for deferent purposes,
depending on the user’s preference. Failure to provide the service in a better
and cheaper way may force the customers to leave. WhatsApp provided more
features than AOL Messenger. Users were satisfied with its services since its
easier. Many AOL users migrated to WhatsApp to compare what they want and later
found it more user-friendly. Other reasons why users leave a platform can be
attributed to poor anesthetic features and cost of use (McAfee, &
Brynjolfsson, 2017).

The success of a
platform depends on the decisions made by the owner and software developer
team. Many of platform failures have resulted from poor decision making. Newer
platforms like Facebook have also user-friendly space which has attracted many
users from Myspace.
